Nat contemplated John’s words as he drove home after dropping John off at the house. Of course, he wanted the shop. He and his dad had talked about it for what seemed like forever. They’d even started a business plan shortly before he died. It was their dream. And when Nate Walker died, it became Nat’s dream.

Then why had he said he didn’t want a shop? Granted, at first, he hadn’t. When his dad had first brought it up, Nat had been against the idea simply because owning a customer-facing store meant dealing with people. And Nat was not a peopler. But once his mom had gotten on board and announced she wanted to manage and run the place, he’d gotten with the program.

Hadn’t he?

Yes, he had. It was taking him some time to get the shop up and running, but he’d get there just as soon as he found the perfect location.

His windshield wipers fought against the rain, and his headlights cut a path through the light fog. He considered doing a U-turn in the middle of the two-lane, tree-lined highway and heading to Quinn’s, but he’d promised to give the man space to figure shit out.

What would happen between them now, if anything? While Quinn had been cooped up with his family at the Lakeshore Police Department with Agent Harding for over a week, Nat had shown up on occasion to keep him company or bring him something to eat. Quinn spent some of those nights with him too. Sometimes they had sex, sometimes they talked about mundane things that didn’t involve the words Evan or Court or FBI or kidnapped, and other times Quinn was too exhausted to do anything but fall into bed after a quick text exchange or phone call with Ian. In between all of that, Quinn was trying to get to know Evan and Court while making sure Shay didn’t feel left out, he was spending time with his parents, who’d flown in from New York as soon as they got the call from Quinn two weeks ago, and he was still teaching three evenings a week and on Saturday mornings. Nat couldn’t begin to understand what he was going through. Giving Quinn his space had seemed like the wisest move.

Yet, the fact that Quinn hadn’t once asked to see him in the last four days made Nat feel like he was getting the shaft.

So no. He didn’t make that U-turn and go see Quinn. He kept heading for home instead.

Except there was a car behind him that he’d seen a few times in the last two weeks. A tiny white Fiat that was no match for Lakeshore’s back roads. Nat squinted and tried to read the license plate, but the rain hindered his vision. If this was a reporter who’d somehow discovered his connection to Quinn and who was following him home in the hopes of ambushing either him or Quinn, then they were in for a surprise.

He drove past the lane
